Evaluation after listening lecture

Psychology 156, lecture 2, Fall 2006 UC Burkeley

This lecture was about "Human Emotion". The lecturer gave a lot of definitions, questions, examples, and specific explanation. The topic was strongly related to routine life so that it was very easy to imagine the situation and understand the facts. Moreover, because of speaker's questions it was easy to concentrate in the lecture. Asking lots of questions was very useful method to attract student's attentions. He asked various questions such as, " How do we define emotion? Can we have unconcern emotion? How do emotions occur? What are the characters of emotion?". The lecturer gave all of the answers for these questions with specific explanation. When he used difficult and specialized word, he gave easy definition for it. Therefore, it was very easy to understand the exact meanings. One of the most interesting information was the characteristics of emotion which differentiate it from others. According to the lecturer, emotion is feeling of physical changes. This have special features; happen to somebody without voluntary, happen together, happen really fast and it has a focus. It was very useful lecture because it helped me to broaden my knowledges. However, the lecturer gave lots of questions, and waited for students' answer. But it was really hard to hear the students' voices. So I couldn't know what they were talking about. This was the most annoying problem in this lecture. In spite of this problem, it was very valuable lecture.

My first time in Naiyagara Fall~^^

It was so exciting!! It was very good day for trip, because it wasn't that cold or hot. The view was wonderful! In fact, Naiyagara Fall was not bigger than I thought, but it was amazing. I felt a fresh air. It made me so happy that I was at such a beautiful place. When I got closer to the fall, I could see the fast flows of water which made me feel little bit scary^^;; One of the most interesting thing was that there were so many places to visit and play. I didn't expected there would be lots of places for entertaining, but even there was a "Casino". I really wanted to visit there, but I didn't bring my passport, so I couldn't go inside. However, I enjoyed a lot!!! I went to great Italian restaurant, and the food was so delicious!! Also, visit the big shopping mall ( outlet) , and bought some stuff^^;; . Tomoko, my Japanese friend, was with me, so the trip was much more wonderful^^ When I came back to Finch station, I take Tomoko to Korean restaurant.( Because she said she really want to eat Korean food. ) She ate a Bi-Bim- Bab(?)- mixed rice with vegetable, meat and Korean sauce. I was so happy, because she ate all of it. ; she told me that it was very good!

It was very happy trip!!! I really want to go there again, especailly in summer. Because I think I can enjoy more beautiful view, various kind of flowers and trees. It was one of the most memorable trip in my life!!!^^

Evaluation about 'Culture shock'

The lecture of 'Culture shock' focused on explanation. The professor explained why 'Culture shock ' is a valuable process. She stated causes, machanism of four defenses, six symptoms of culture shock, 4 stages of culture shock, length of culture shock and lessons people get from culture shock. The profosser explains very well by giving specific examples which helped me understand well and attracted me to the lecture. She used not that difficult word; When she used difficult word, she told a definition. Therefore, it was very easy to understand. Especially she gave such a good examples which is related to real life. So, it was very efficient for attracting students' attention to her main idea.

I am an international student, so I could reflect my situation and apply what the professor said to my experience. I could realize why I act like that and know how to act now. All of the contents in the lecture were interesting for me, because I was in the middle of culture shock. According to the lecture, now I am in the last stage of the culture shock. I understand cultural difference, and accept it. Also, I feel very happy , because I learned a lot such as langauge, customs, how to act in some situation, independance, cooperation and how to deal with other people. These were mentioned in the lecture, and these were the reason why the professor evaluted culture shock as a valuable and useful process. I extremely agree with the professor. People can't live alone. People live together, so learning interpersonal skills is very important and essential. Before watching this lecture, I thought culture shock is negative symptom which I have to avoid. I thought it causes depression and isolation. It was, however, wrong conception. What I know was just a part of culture shock. Now, I know correctly what culture shock is. Moreover, I can evaluate my experience of culture shock in an objective way, and I can say I have had very valuable experience in my life.

In conclution, this lecture was very useful for me as I want to recommend to other people. I learned a lot of knowledges from this lecture. Moreover, I can apply them in my life.

How is it going~??^^

Last week, there were lots of homework than the week before. So, sometimes I was stressed a little^^; but, it was kind of positive stress. Because, I had to use library and study to do my assignment. If there were no homework, it would be very hard for me to start studying in the library. Especially, 'reading journal was the impressive assignment for me. Because, I always wanted to read a lots of books in English to improve my speed of reading, but usaully I couldn't read that much. Because of homework, I read lots(?) of magazines and used internet resources a lot. So, it was very useful for me. In fact, I read things because of homework, but now I started to read something I want (not just for homework). Moreover, listening the lecture was very useful assignment- It was very good to improve my listening skill.

Actually, if there are lots of homework, it makes my mind very heavy....^^;. But I know they are very useful for me. I came here to improve my English skill, so I will do my best !^^
I think reading a newspaper daily or listening a news will be good for improving English skills- doing something daily is very important. So, this week I will try to do these things daily. Also, I feel a lot that my vocabulary should be improved. Therefore, I will try to study vocabulary this week. ^^

Critique about ' Wal Mart'

The director of ' Wal Mart ' wanted to show the real inside situation of Wal Mart. ; He/she focused on not just surface of Wal mart, but also real relationship between employees and employers. The director really wanted people to know about the serious situation. In fact, the director deosn't appear in the movie, so he /she doesn't states about his opinion directly. People who watch the movie, however, can know that the director is against to the bad work condition in Wal- Mart. Because, the director focuses on relationship between workers and managers, worker's real life which is affected by Wal Mart, health care and union. In addition, the director is giving specific statistics, news and interviews for evidence. These were objective and blanced information. In fact, the director interviewed more workers than managers. But considering the rate of workers and managers, this movie can't be said 'biased'. Moreover, this movie shows the workers and managers interview by turns, so it was easy to compare the opposite views about the same situation. Therefore, this documantary can be evaluated that it is well-organized.

I thoroughly agree with the director's point of view ; I belive that people should know about this serious situation, and think about the solution. Actually, I didn't know about this that much. I could just think that workers' work condition would be bad, but the real situation was worse than I thought. After watching this movie, I could think about 'Wal Mart' in various aspact. I learned that surface which I can see is not the all. Before watching this movie, I thought 'Wal Mart' is just a huge market where I can by products in low price. However, this movie broaden my view, I can think about this issue more deeply than past. Moreover, I felt that Wal Mart is pretending, because it had to pay attention to the society's voice. ; Wal Mart didn't want to listen people saying like, ' Wal Mart earned a lot of money, but never pay back to community and its workers. Therefore, they acts like they are really caring their workers, but it wasn't true. I felt angry about this part. When I saw how Wal Mart do to people who attend in Union, I felt anger and fear. Additionally, I strongly felt that worker's condition and benefits should be improved as fast as it can. Moreover, I could think about the America's economy-especially about the monopoly.

In conclusion, this movie was valuable for me. It made me think more about the issue, broaden my view and knowledges. However, suggesting statistic was hard to understand and relate to the issue. ; It fastly disappeared without explanation. Except this part, I believe this movie was very useful to understand real inside situation in big companies. Moreover, this movie is well organized and objective.
